Quick Quiz and Intro to Lines

We had a quick quiz on Scientific Notation today, then we looked at different types and parts of lines. Students had the opportunity to work on their math homework in class while they waited for others to complete their quizzes. Some finished their homework, some didn't, but all should take a second look at it after seeing the presentation on lines.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and a safe and happy Halloween!

More Scientific Notation

Some students still needed practice with Scientific Notation, so we spent today practicing on whiteboards. We'll have the quick quiz tomorrow. It is only 10 questions and each one is worth 10 points out of 100, so be sure to practice tonight with the homework, and online through the website listed under Mrs. Spoon's avatar!

Scientific Notation

Today we wrote notes on scientific notation, and copied a 'blueprint' for writing numbers in scientific notation. Please refer to yesterday's post for Hints to Remember when working with very large (1 or greater) or very small (between 0 and 1) numbers. This is also what the students wrote for notes today.

Homework:
Ws. pg. 73

We will be having a quiz on Thursday on Scientific Notation.

Housekeeping and Scientific Notation

Today, we went over the MCAS question from Friday, then started our lesson on Scientific Notation by reviewing the homework from Thursday.

Hints to remember:
A number multiplied by a positive power of 10 will become larger.
A number multiplied by a negative power of 10 will become smaller.
A number written in scientific notation is a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10.
When a number is written in scientific notation:
If the original number was very large, the power of 10 will be positive.

If the original number was very small, the power of 10 will be negative.

Homework:
Ws. p. 59
(C Block: you may skip numbers 5 through 8.)

Computer Lab

We finished up our quizzes in the computer lab, then spent some time exploring more fun, helpful websites all about math.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Next week we will be working with powers of 10, both positive and negative, which will lead us to scientific notation of very large and very small numbers.

Whiteboard practice

Today in class, we practiced multiplication and division of decimals on individual whiteboards. Students need to be careful to avoid simple errors in addition and subtraction, and keep practicing the multiplication facts through 12.

Homework:
E and F :Multiplying Decimals C and Dividing Decimals D (this is a two-sided worksheet)
# 1-16

B and C: Multiplying Decimals C and Dividing Decimals D (this is a two-sided worksheet) # 1-4 on side C, #9-12 on side D

Quiz on Thursday, 10/22. Make sure to see me for extra help if you are having difficulty with any of the four operations involving decimals.

Crash and Slide ( and traditional multiplication too! :) )

We went ahead and started decimal multiplication today, and we'll keep practicing division as well. The students had an easier time with multiplication than division!!

Homework:
Multiplying Decimals A

We are having a quiz on Thursday, 10/22/09. It will include all 4 operations involving decimals. You must be prepared to use traditional long division to solve division problems. Partial quotient method will not be allowed!
Please see me for extra help if you are having difficulty with any of the operations.

Long Division, again

We practiced some more long division with remainders and decimals in the divisors. I'm hearing a lot of "aha's", so the fog is lifting!

We will continue division on Monday, then I plan to move on to multiplication of decimals on Tuesday. Wednesday or Thursday we will have a quiz on decimals, all four operations, then we will be starting Scientific Notation.

Homework:

If you were with Mrs. Fitzpatrick, please follow her instructions for homework.

For those with Mrs. Spoon
Ws. Long Division C

Remainders and decimals in divisors

Still working on division, we looked at what to do with those pesky remainders (some parents have already helped out on this!) and started division involving decimals in the divisors. We will continue working with decimal division into the beginning of next week. We will most likely be having a quiz toward the end of next week, which will consist of all four operations involving decimals.

Homework:
B and C blocks were split up to address difficulty with traditional division and readiness to move on.
Mrs. Fitzpatrick's group has a worksheet on traditional division
Mrs. Spoon's groups are as follows
B: remaining problems on worksheet pg. 38 and 39 (those not already done)
C: ws. pg. 39 #1-16 (not 1, 7, 9, 13)

E Block: ws, pg. 39 # 1-16, not 13
F Block: ws. pg. 39 # 1-16, not 1,7,9,13

Does McDonalds Sell Cheese Burgers?

Today we learned a phrase to help us remember the steps to solve division problems the traditional way!! It is difficult for many students, but keep trying and you will get it! Luckily your parents learned this way and can help you. :)

Homework: Ws. p. 19, dividing decimals. It is ok to record a remainder for today. I will teach you another way to handle remainders tomorrow!!

Late Post; Sorry!

Tuesday in class, I gave the students their data quizzes back, and we went over the answers. Any student who received a score less than 70% is encouraged to re-take the quiz. I strongly suggest that those students come in for an extra help session to go over the quiz concepts to be sure they are more secure before making up the quiz. This should be done within a week's time.
F and C blocks started division of decimals today. We are moving to the traditional way of division, probably a welcome change for most parents/guardians!! This may be a difficult transition for some students, but with hard work and patience it will be mastered!

E and B blocks did not receive homework because we didn't have time to get to division today.

Homework for F and C blocks:
Dividing Decimals worksheet: circled problems only (1-12 on page 38, 1, 7, 9 on page 39.

District Vocab. Diagnostic Assessment

Today we took a vocabulary test on MCAS math vocabulary. It doesn't count for a grade, just gives information for the district (and me) to use throughout the year. The students will take the same test at the end of the year, which will count for a grade. I told everyone not to stress about it, and to feel fine skipping what they didn't know, because I haven't taught the words yet (for the most part!)
Hope everyone has a great long weekend!! Remember, no school tomorrow or Monday, so see you on Tuesday for multiplication of decimals; think 'Crash and Slide'!

Homework:

Ws. Rounding Decimals (please make sure the follow the directions in each of the three sections!)
