Sum of the interior angles of a polygon

Today we calculated the sum of the interior angles of several polygons and derived a formula (number sentence) to help us find the sum no matter how many sides a polygon has. This formula is (n - 2) times 180, with n being the number of sides of the polygon.

Homework:
Unit Review Packet

The homework is review for the QUIZ we are having on WEDNESDAY this week. We will be reviewing concepts tomorrow in preparation for the quiz. Please plan to stay after school Tuesday, or come for extra help before school on Tuesday or Wednesday if you are having difficulty preparing for the quiz.
Concepts that will be on the quiz:
lines
angles
triangles (classifying)
polygons
symmetry
congruence and similarity
transformations, drawing shapes on the coordinate grid
three-dimensional figures, faces, edges, vertices
sum of interior angles of a polygon

Prisms, pyramids and Euler's formula

Today we counted the number of faces, edges and vertices of prisms and pyramids, and checked our work with Euler's formula ( Vertices - Edges + Faces = 2 ).
E Block came up with a saying to help remember the formula: Visitors Empty food but add Fun. Hopefully that's helpful!

Homework:
Ws. Identifying 3-Dimensional shapes. Name each shape, then count the number of faces, edges and vertices in each one. Use Euler's formula to check your accuracy.

Platonic Solids, Prisms and Pyramids

Today we talked about platonic solids, prisms and pyramids. We counted faces, edges and vertices. The top two websites are the ones we visited in class today.

Homework:
Pizzazz worksheet pg. D-45

Friday, November 20, 2009 (late update)

On Friday we practiced transformations.

Homework:
Finish #2-6 Translations page
#2-6 Reflections page
#3 and 5 Rotations page

Transformations

Today we looked at different types of transformation on a grid. The top 3 websites on our list will take you to the different types of transformations we worked with today.

Homework:
ws. pg. 128: Only B block should do part C. C, E, F should complete parts A and B. Try part C if you would like.

There will NOT be a quiz tomorrow, since I was out a day this week, and there is a SCIENCE quiz tomorrow!!

Review of symmetry and congruence

I was out today so the students worked on a review of symmetry and congruence.
We may be having a small quiz on Friday.

Homework:
Ws. on polygon statements.

Field trip today

Today we saw Eureka!, a play about math. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed it! Hopefully, the students did too.

No homework was given today. Monday's homework is due tomorrow.

Rotational symmetry

Today we corrected the illustrations we drew for our vocabulary packet and took a quick look at rotational symmetry. B block didn't have time to get to the lesson, so they do not have homework!!

We are going to have a quiz this Friday on lines, angles, and polygons. More information will come Wednesday in class.

Homework (except for B block):
SF Ws. Pg. 99

more on congruence, similarity and symmetry

Today we continued our work with the above topics. You will find the symmetry activity website on the 'helpful website' list on this page.

Homework:
SF ws. p 96 and 98 (this is a two-sided worksheet)

Thursday, November 12, 2009

Congruence, Similarity, Symmetry

Today we looked at figures that are congruent, similar and symmetrical. There are several websites that help students practice these concepts. A couple of them are listed on top of the 'helpful websites' section on this blog.

Homework:
Pizzazz worksheet D-41 and D-44 (this is a two-sided worksheet)

Vocabulary: Circled terms should be illustrated by Monday, November 16. They are:
1,2,3,10,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,27,29,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40,4345,48,51,52,53,55,56

Late post; not feeling well that day!! Sorry.

On Monday we did some seat work with polygons. Most of the students had time to finish a good portion of the packet in class.

Monday's Homework:
Finish polygon packet

Tuesday I was out sick; the students corrected their polygon packet, then worked on a decimal review worksheet.

Tuesday's Homework:
Polygon worksheet (two-sided worksheet)

MCAS Open Response question #3 with graphic organizer

Today we used a graphic organizer to answer part a of MCAS OR #3. We stressed the importance of explaining your work to earn more points on the questions.

Homework:
Complete the graphic organizer and MCAS Open Response #3.

Classifying Triangles

Today we are classifying triangles by the lengths of their sides and the measures of their angles.

Homework:
Ws. Pizzazz D-26

Please bring permission slips in for the Eureka! field trip.

Sorry, late update!

Yesterday in class we looked at different types of angles, a review. Today we will be reviewing different types of triangles, and hopefully start polygons.

Homework:
B and C: worksheet on angles

E and F: worksheet on angles, finish ws. page 138, both sides!

A few people have not brought in their field trip permission slips; please send them in right away!
