Fraction Rap

Fraction Rap (found on Teachertube)

I saw a fraction on my pizza one day
I saw a fraction on a sale
It was 1/4 off this and 1/2 off that
Made me one heck of a deal

When you're adding up or taking away
Fractions, don't be a hater
Bottom numbers gotta be the same
Common denominator
Bottom numbers gotta be the same
Common denominator

I gotta pass the test
I gotta make the grade
My fraction friend came to my aid
She said
Dividing fractions is easy as pie
Flip the second and multiply
Dividing fractions is easy as pie
Flip the second and multiply
Flip the second and multiply

Multiply fractions, no big problem
Top times top over bottom times bottom
Multiply fractions, no big problem
Top times top over bottom times bottom
Top times top over bottom times bottom

When you study smart, everybody wins
And know that fractions are your friends

B and C: In these classes, we worked on the list methods of finding factors and multiples, common factors and common multiples and GCF and LCM.

E and F: In these classes, we worked on listing factors and multiples and finding numbers that are 'abundant', 'deficient' and 'perfect'.

Homework:
B and C: CM ws. pg. 40

E and F: CM ws. pg. 14

There will be a quiz on Monday, 12/21 on factors and multiples.

B and C: We worked on Prime Factorization using Upside Down Division

E and F: We worked on word problems using GCF and LCM to solve them.

Homework:
E and F Blocks: CM ws. pg. 40

B and C Blocks: Pizzazz ws. pg. C-16 # 1-9 only

Friday, December 11, 2009

LCM and Prime Factorization

B and C Blocks worked on more upside down division and determining the LCM of two numbers.
E and F Blocks continued using upside down division to determine the prime factorization of a number. Remember, the prime factorization is like the finger print of a number!!

Homework:
B and C: Pizzazz C-18

E and F: Pizzazz C-16

LCM and/or GCF and Prime Time Picture

B and C: We worked on practicing GCF and Prime number identification.
E: Lesson on LCM and Prime Time picture
F: Reviewed Lesson on LCM and Prime Time Picture

Homework:

B, C, F: Complete Prime Time Picture

E: Complete LCM Worksheet, C-18

Multiples and the Product Game

Today we finished up the Sieve of Eratosthenes and played the Product Game. This time, blocks B and C won against the teacher!

Homework:
ws. Multiply That!!

Monday, December 7, 2009

More on Factors and Divisibility

Today we worked on divisibility rules in all classes, and in E and F we also worked on the Sieve of Eratosthenes.

Homework:
Pizzazz ws. p. 11 and 12 (this is a two-sided worksheet)

Friday, December 4, 2009

Factors Fit Into

Today we worked with factors, and played the Factor Game against the teacher. Yes, B block did beat me!!! Ouch!!

Homework:
Prime Time ws. pg. 12, 13 (a two-sided worksheet)
(Blocks E, F, B: skip number 10 a and b)

Computer Lab

We were in the computer lab for our math class today. We took a quick look at the factor game, and tried to develop strategies to 'beat' the computer at the game! Be thinking about your strategies, because tomorrow you will have a chance to challenge a human opponent.

Homework:
Clean out the 'daily work and notes' section of your binder. Please place all of that work in a folder and keep it at home. We may need to take a second look at some of those papers later in the year, so please don't lose them.

Quiz/Test today

Today we are having our quiz! I know everyone will do well!!

Homework:
Dr. Math questions. Answer three of the questions. Please follow the directions and answer them in letter form in complete sentences on a separate piece of paper or on the back.

Review For Quiz

Today we reviewed for the quiz we are having tomorrow.

Homework:
Study For QUIZ

Quiz Tomorrow on
lines
angles
triangles (classifying)
polygons
symmetry
congruence and similarity
transformations, drawing shapes on the coordinate grid
three-dimensional figures, faces, edges, vertices
sum of interior angles of a polygon

Monday, November 30, 2009

Sum of the interior angles of a polygon

Today we calculated the sum of the interior angles of several polygons and derived a formula (number sentence) to help us find the sum no matter how many sides a polygon has. This formula is (n - 2) times 180, with n being the number of sides of the polygon.

Homework:
Unit Review Packet

The homework is review for the QUIZ we are having on WEDNESDAY this week. We will be reviewing concepts tomorrow in preparation for the quiz. Please plan to stay after school Tuesday, or come for extra help before school on Tuesday or Wednesday if you are having difficulty preparing for the quiz.
Concepts that will be on the quiz:
lines
angles
triangles (classifying)
polygons
symmetry
congruence and similarity
transformations, drawing shapes on the coordinate grid
three-dimensional figures, faces, edges, vertices
sum of interior angles of a polygon

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Prisms, pyramids and Euler's formula

Today we counted the number of faces, edges and vertices of prisms and pyramids, and checked our work with Euler's formula ( Vertices - Edges + Faces = 2 ).
E Block came up with a saying to help remember the formula: Visitors Empty food but add Fun. Hopefully that's helpful!

Homework:
Ws. Identifying 3-Dimensional shapes. Name each shape, then count the number of faces, edges and vertices in each one. Use Euler's formula to check your accuracy.

Monday, November 23, 2009

Platonic Solids, Prisms and Pyramids

Today we talked about platonic solids, prisms and pyramids. We counted faces, edges and vertices. The top two websites are the ones we visited in class today.

Homework:
Pizzazz worksheet pg. D-45

Friday, November 20, 2009 (late update)

On Friday we practiced transformations.

Homework:
Finish #2-6 Translations page
#2-6 Reflections page
#3 and 5 Rotations page

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Transformations

Today we looked at different types of transformation on a grid. The top 3 websites on our list will take you to the different types of transformations we worked with today.

Homework:
ws. pg. 128: Only B block should do part C. C, E, F should complete parts A and B. Try part C if you would like.

There will NOT be a quiz tomorrow, since I was out a day this week, and there is a SCIENCE quiz tomorrow!!

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Review of symmetry and congruence

I was out today so the students worked on a review of symmetry and congruence.
We may be having a small quiz on Friday.

Homework:
Ws. on polygon statements.

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Field trip today

Today we saw Eureka!, a play about math. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed it! Hopefully, the students did too.

No homework was given today. Monday's homework is due tomorrow.

Monday, November 16, 2009

Rotational symmetry

Today we corrected the illustrations we drew for our vocabulary packet and took a quick look at rotational symmetry. B block didn't have time to get to the lesson, so they do not have homework!!

We are going to have a quiz this Friday on lines, angles, and polygons. More information will come Wednesday in class.

Homework (except for B block):
