Line graphs and more mean

Today the class worked with finding a missing piece of data when given all but one piece of the data, and the mean. This is a bit challenging, as it involves some algebraic thinking, but we will keep working on it!
Except for B class (we ran out of time!), we also reviewed creating and interpreting line plots. One question on the homework asks about 'constant rate'. A constant rate is shown by a straight line with no breaks or curves in it. ( We will get to this Friday B block!)

Tomorrow we will be in the computer lab in the library, working on coordinate planes and plotting points, so that our robot doesn't blow up! Fun!

Homework:

Ws. P. 17 and 19 (this is a two-sided worksheet on mean and line plots)

B-block: You only have to complete p. 17 (the one on mean)

The quiz on our data unit is coming up on Tuesday, October 6, so please plan accordingly. **(If you need extra help on any concept in our data unit, please plan to come in any morning after 8, or this Thursday (tomorrow) after school for extra help.)

Bar Graphs and mean

Today we finished up our bar graph activity. We created bar graphs to represent the number of students who attended each elementary school in Beverly, private school or other town.
We took a look at finding the mean of information recorded in a stem and leaf plot. The homework has students practicing bar graphs and finding range, mean and median.
We passed out a binder table of contents, to help the students keep their binders organized.

Homework:

ws. p. 20 and 13 (this is a two-sided worksheet)

The quiz on our data unit is coming up on Tuesday, October 6, so please plan accordingly. **(if you need extra help on any area in our data unit, please plan to come in any morning after 8, or Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon for extra help!!)**

Bar graphs, histograms

We watched a video on bar graphs and histograms. In F block and C block we tallied the number of students who attended each elementary school in Beverly or Peabody, or private school. We will do the same for E and B blocks on Tuesday. We will then be creating a bar graph of the data.

Have a great long weekend! Remember, no school on Monday!

Homework:

Open Response Question 1 (please answer all parts of the open response question and show all your work)

If you didn't finish your circle graph for your 24 hour day, please do so over the weekend.

Thursday, September 24

Sorry for the late update!
Great 'Picture Day' cooperation, but shortened classes :(
Today we reviewed circle graphs, then we made one of our own to represent how we spend the hours in a day. We will be posting these around the classroom and hallway.

Homework:
1) Finish circle graph activity

2) Circle worksheet and survey (this is a two-sided worksheet)

MAP testing

We spent our class time today in the Library computer lab, taking the MAP (measures of academic progress) test. This test is for district and teacher use for curriculum planning, and does not affect students' grades!
Tomorrow we will be going over scatter plots, and will work on circle graphs. The students will be graphing how they spend the hours in a typical school day.

Homework:
Fill out the 'how I spend my day' chart.

Make sure you have completed Tuesday's homework (ws. p. 3) If you had trouble, see the link for scatter plots on the right side of this page (under your math teacher!)

It was great to see so many parents/guardians at our open house last night! Thank you!

Scatter Plots

Today we looked at scatter plots, and discussed trends. Tomorrow we will visit the computer lab where students will take the math MAP (measures of academic progress) test.

Homework:
Ws. p. 3 (Practice 1.3)

Looking forward to seeing parents/guardians at Curriculum Night tonight!

Stem and Leaf plots continued

We continued our work with stem and leaf plots today. E and F block looked at other types of stem and leaf plots, while B and C finished their activity from Friday.

Homework:

B and C: ws. pp. 5 and 7 (this is a two-sided worksheet)

E and F: ws. pp. 11 and 12 (this is a two-sided worksheet)

Stem and leaf plots

By vote or circumstances, the classes participated in either a paper airplane or penny activity today. It was all about collecting, organizing and representing data in stem and leaf plot form. We revisited median, mode, and range as well.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Homework:

*Ws. Study Link 1.3 p. 10

*Ws. SI Expanded Notation,(skip # 2) This is a review of a concept from our place value unit. See EM Student Reference Book, notes or handouts to refresh your memory!

Thursday, 9/17/09

We finished up our 'Mystery Plot' activity today, interpreting our line plots and identifying some landmarks of our data.

Homework:
Bluebook Ws. p. 45 (one-sided worksheet on line plots)

September 16, 2009

Math class was full of activity today as we completed a brief survey, collected and organized our results, then created line plots with the data. We will be continuing this activity tomorrow.

Homework:
*Ws. Study link 1-2, pg. 8 (this is one worksheet, all of which must be completed)
Hint: remember to use your Everyday Math Reference Book for assistance

*Study selected vocabulary terms

Monday, September 14, 2009

Today we spent class time on 'housekeeping' issues; learning the process of 'holey cards', returning and reviewing quizzes, fine tuning the organization of our binders, discussing the vocabulary assignment and taking a look at this blog.

Check out the helpful website link for Math Playground. The Space Racer game will help your performance on your holey cards!

Homework (due Wednesday):

Give an illustration or example for each of your 23 new Data vocabulary words.
Bring an example of a graph to math class on Wednesday.

Week of 9/7 to 9/11

This week we sharpened our number sense by studying place value, including notation of large and small numbers, exponential and expanded notation and sequencing numbers. Throughout the week, the students worked on a Scavenger Hunt, using their Everyday Math Reference Books. This book should be stored at home for the entire school year. It will be a valuable reference that the students should be using for homework help when needed.
The students had a quiz on Friday, and started organizing their binders in class. The homework was to finish organizing their binders.
On Monday we will be going over the quiz from Friday, then we will be making sure our binders are in order. There is no school on Tuesday and on Wednesday we will be starting our new unit which will be focusing on Data.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Thursday, September 3

This week the students spent a great deal of time learning how to open their locks, finding their way to 'Expressive Arts' and getting to know their teachers.
Today in math, we took a diagnostic assessment of basic math skills, danced the 'Cha Cha Slide' and started going over our classroom policies and expectations.
The students have a homework-free long weekend, a rare happening in 6 blue math.
Next week will bring the distribution of Every Day Math Reference books, a scavenger hunt and lessons in Number Sense.
